About ARONETIS™ - Part 3. Language Layouts!

One of the basis principles of the “ARONETIS™” system is that the system individually considers peculiarities of each language. This principle is applied so that, for each language used, the “ARONETIS™” system provides a special layout designed with consideration of both frequency of the characters in the texts of the language and position of the characters on the full keyboard layout for this language.

As the layouts for all languages currently used in the system have been designed on the same principles, we will now outline and explain these principles here.

The general and fundamental principle applied for distribution of the characters assigned to one a group over the positions in a layout is the principle # 1: the position of a character in the layout on the screen of a mobile device shall be as close as possible to its position on the full PC keyboard.

For the characters, which belong to the group of the most frequent characters, also the principle # 2 is applied : - the first group (circle) of letters shall make up the name of the method ( if we read the letters clockwise starting form the letter “A”).

The principle # 2 was important for the layouts of English and Russian languages. For the layouts of other languages this principle was not applied because groups of the 8 most frequent letters for other languages are different from the 8 most frequent letters in English and Russian languages.

For distribution of the characters over the positions in the third group we have additionally considered the fact that it will be easier to enter the characters on the positions 18, 21, 24, 26, 28, 31, 34 and 16 because, for entering the characters assigned to these positions, the last two keypresses will be performed on the same key of the mobile phone keypad – “1”, “2”, “3”, “6”, “9”, “8”, “7” and “4”, respectively. It is obvious that the most frequent characters of the third group must be assigned to these positions – and this was the principle # 3. The positions of characters in a layout are illustrated on figure.

The four positions – 36, 37, 38, 39 - are currently reserved in all layouts. During development of the project a decision will be taken on which symbols must be assigned to these positions.

Originally, these positions were reserved because on the phones with limited screen resolution (such as Siemens SL 55), the number of vertical pixels was less than that of horizontal pixels and it was possible to arrange only 5 rows of symbols of the size 12 x 12 pixels in the third group instead of 7 rows as it is implied by the concept of the project. Because of this, a decision was taken to temporary reserve and not to display two rows of characters.
