ARONETIS™ - F.A.Q. or frequently asked questions!

How do I type by ARONETIS?

"ARONETIS™" - is intended to be used on(with) so called reduced keyboards - for input of text in mobile phones and other electronic devices. The main novelty of the method is the following: the symbols are not painted on the phone buttons. They are presented by phone screen. It is mean that display presents letters corresponding to the phone buttons at different moments of typing. As a result of this proposition the symbols must be presented by phone screen in compliance with topology of phone buttons.

Because quantity of the symbols is more then quantity of the buttons, set of all symbols of a language is divided for several groups. or eight main European languages the number of groups is 3. As a matter of principle - the most often encountered in text symbols are separated to the first group, letters of the less frequency of occurrence - to the second and all others - to the third one. For the standard variant of the mobile phone keyboard first and second groups include of 8 symbols each and groups are presented on screen by rounds (or circles).

For input of symbols of first group (most often encountered) is enough to press a corresponding button (“1”, ”2” , “3”, “4”, “6”, ”7”, ”8” or “9”) just once. For input of symbols of other groups a user should firstly change the group by pressing for a special button (it is - "5") and to press a corresponding button - to input a symbol of group. When user changes the active group the images of symbols on the screen are changed too. So, s/he can always see what symbols are corresponded to what buttons.

After input of a symbol of all groups, the first one became an active group automatically. To set the third group as active a user should press button "5" twice. Usually, the third group includes more than 8 symbols. So, they are presented on the screen as subgroups. That's why user should press firstly a button to choose a needed subgroup and then a button corresponded to a symbol place in subgroup. As a result, user makes 1 pressure to input symbol of 1st group (for most frequently occurred symbols), 2 pressures to input a symbol of 2nd group, and 4 pressures - of 3rd. For each language the layout of a symbol inside the group (topology on screen) should be as close as possible to standard PC keyboard layout. It is mean that if "X" on PC keyboard is in the left down corner then on mobile screen "X" should be also in the left down corner and it will be inputted by corresponded left down button - "1" of mobile phone.

The standard design of reduced keyboards is 12 buttons arranged by triads in 4 rows. The bottom row of the buttons - «*», «0» è «#» are used for changing the languages, entering the space symbol and changing capital and simple letters as “caps lock” key in PC, correspondingly.

By default the space is entering by pressing on “0” button (like Nokia phones), but it is possible to change this option as user wishes. The long pressure allows typing digits; a button double click inputs a last symbol. Such slight alterations increase the effectiveness too.

What is advantage of ARONETIS in comparison of “Multitap”(Abc)?

The profit is that the most frequent symbols are entered with one keypress. And ARONETIS take in account the frequency of occurrence of symbols in a specific language - Russian, English, etc.

Multitap uses the alphabetic order of letters arrangement on the phone buttons and it is not an optimal solving the problem. For example “G”, “J”,”P”,”W” are entered by one keypress, but they are much more seldom letters than “O”,”R” or “S” what take three or four keystrokes to be inputted.

The same situation is for other languages – the alphabetic order is not optimal for all of them too.

In comparison with the standard “ÌultiTap” input method, the “ARONETIS™” method ensures significant, mathematically provable, benefit in reducing an average number of keypresses per input of one character.

The results of comparison

Is it possible to input the symbols not marked on the keys?

Because in ARONETIS all symbols corresponded to the buttons are presented just on the screen, so it is no matter what letters are painted on the buttons of the phone. Even if the buttons will be absolutely clean the method will be worked as well as usual.

This feature allows to input and send (as SMS) the texts in languages what are not officially supported by producers of phones, for example – in Belarusian.

By the way – it is much more comfortable to type by ARONETIS – because the size of the letters on the screen is more then they size on the buttons. Also you will not need to switch you attention between buttons and screen, as with Multitap.

How to change the language layouts?

There are more then a dozen language layouts in ARONETIS. The user should attach some or even all of them before typing. The attached layouts are switched by button «*» in cycle.For example, user types the message in English but with some Russian symbols. If he(she) attached just English and Russian layouts, so the button “*” will switch them by the following: En-Ru-En-Ru…

It is possible to attach all available layouts, but it is not convenient. For example if 5 languages are attached but the user apply just two of them, so he (or she) will spend 4 presses in vain to switch for necessary language: En-Ru-Fr-It -Es-En-Ru and so on.

The same principle is used in Windows for change the layouts of the PC keyboards.

That’s why we recommend attaching just active used layouts.

What languages are supported by ARONETIS?

At presence with ARONETIS it is possible to enter texts simultaneously in 10 languages – English, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Russian, French, Swedish.

Beside that two layouts of commonly used symbols and one of mathematical symbols are supported. In the nearest future it will possible to type in all European languages and even some Asian ones

Generally it will be possible to enter texts in any language with the alphabet less then 50 letters.

Does ARONETIS use a vocabulary?

No, ARONETIS does not use vocabularies. The method is based on the frequency of occurrence of symbols in every specific language - Russian, English, etc.

Why ARONETIS is better than systems like T9 or iTap?

First of all, ARONETIS is more comfortable in using than T9 or iTap.

The systems “ARONETIS™” and “T9™” are comparable in the average number of keypresses for input of one character if we consider all keypresses, including those for inserting punctuation marks or shifting the case. At the same time, as compared with the “T9™”-like systems, the “ARONETIS™” will have the following advantages:

  • it is possible to input words, which are not stored in the vocabulary, such as personal names, addresses, abbreviations, technical terms, passwords, etc;
  • it is possible to input a message comprising words from different languages (any number of languages) at the same time;
  • it is possible to enter various special symbols (for example mathematical symbols or transcription symbols;
  • it is easy to add layouts for new languages and it is easy to switch between layouts for different languages;
  • it is possible to use for input any of the supported languages, independently of the characters marked on the keys of the mobile phone;
  • the system is not sensitive to spelling errors;
  • it is possible to input text based on non-Roman alphabets with Roman letters (transliteration) or automatic conversion of Cyrillic text in transliterated text.

Beside that ARONETIS needs considerably less memory and in the nearest feature will allow to construct the arbitrary layouts, for example to input strong passwords.

How to install Java program to a phone?

There are two ways to install the java program to a mobile phone: by internet (WAP/GPRS/EDGE connection) and through PC.

Currently the WAP version of this site is under construction, that’s why to install the program by direct download from www.aronetis.com is possible just for the phones with normal web-browsers provided or OperaMini.

During the beta-testing period the prior way of installing is downloading midlet to PC firstly and just after that uploading it to mobile phone.

The experience says that phones of SonyEricsson and Nokia are the friendliest in installing java programs then phones of other producers. After downloading the archive of the program from aronetis.com you should use one of the following connections between PC and phone – by Bluetooth, InfraRed or data (USB) cable. After the connection will be established jad- and jar files should be sent to the phone and confirm the installation by pressing a button of a phone.

By the same way midlets may be installed to the phones of Siemens and BenQ-Siemens.

The installation process for the Motorola phones is a little bit complicated – it needs for special software, like PST or Midway. The detailed information may be found in special sites or forums.

The most phones from Sumsung or LG allow installing java programs just directly from internet site or in some cases – by data-cable. Usually, in the second case the software packed with phone is needed.

Why Java program (midlet) does not properly work on my phone?

Java program implemented ARONETIS has got two base demands to a phone:

  • the size of the screen should be not less then 100x80 pixels.
  • a phone should support MIDP 2.0 profile of Java.

In case of screen has got sizes less than mentioned above it is impossible normally to draw the symbols on the screen. In MIDP 1.0 profile Java programs unfortunately could not send SMS messages and gain access to phone book.

To check your phone correspondence to the requirements you may use the list of phones with MIDP 2.0 support.

A reason of some problems of proper work of midlet may be some specialities of Java machine realization in some models of phones.

If you have some problems with proper work of the midlet, please contact with us (and don’t forget to note about you model of phone). Contact us!

The list of the models what were used for the midlet testing is here.

Is it possible to send a SMS message by the ARONETIS emulator for PC?

No, the program does not support SMS service. ARONETIS emulator for PC is developed just to demonstrate the possibility of the technology.

By the way it may be rather useful for typing short messages in languages for which you don’t know the keyboard layout (Polish, Swedish and so on), for example during ICQ conversation.
